CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office are warning residents of a phone scam that’s circulating throughout the county and surrounding areas.

Scammers are calling residents claiming to be a “Sergeant with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office,” and telling them they missed jury duty or failed to appear in court. The caller also says a warrant was issued and offers the option of either paying a “bond” to avoid arrest or turning yourself in, according to deputies.

Deputies urge residents that if they receive a call like this, to hang up immediately, do not send money or personal information, and report the call to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office at 770-830-5916, or the local law enforcement agency.

According to deputies, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will never:

  • Call to demand payment for missing jury duty
  • Ask residents to pay with a “bond kiosk,” prepaid card, or any form of electronic payment
  • Threaten to arrest over the phone
