State lawmakers returned to the capitol for a special session May 5 to consider carving Memphis into Republican-safe districts.

A new political map of Tennessee being considered by state lawmakers would keep Oak Ridge, a site of massive investment in science and defense, inside the district of a congressman with power over where federal money is spent.

Tennessee’s 3rd Congressional District stretches from the southeastern edge of the state to counties bordering Kentucky, and it includes Roane and Anderson counties, between which the city of Oak Ridge is split. U.S. Rep. Chuck
