The Albany County Legislature has approved a new “AirBnb Tax,” or a tax on short-term residential rentals.
County legislators who advocated for the tax said it would level the playing field. They said the tax would mirror the tax charged on hotel and motel rooms in the county at 6.5%.
“The change will garner new tax revenue to fund county and local services and support the creation and maintenance of a registry of short-term rental owners and units,” county legislators said.
The new tax would apply to short-term rentals of less than 30 days.
Not everyone was happy with the move.
