BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy suffered a political upset Saturday, losing his bid for re-election and failing to advance to the runoff in Louisiana’s closed Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
Republicans Julia Letlow, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, and John Fleming will advance to a June 27 runoff.Letlow led the field with a strong showing, with Fleming taking second place.
Cassidy’s loss follows years of tension with parts of the GOP base after he voted to convict Trump in the former president’s second impeachment trial, which stemmed from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S.
