DOJ announces indictment against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro

The announcement was made on May 20, a date marking Cuba’s independence, but the socialist government argues true freedom began with the 1959 Revolution.

WASHINGTON — Former Cuban President Raul Castro has been indicted for his alleged role in the downing of two planes in 1996 that killed four people, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.  

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche presented the criminal charges during a press conference Wednesday in Miami, Florida. The indictment was presented in conjunction with a ceremony to honor the victims of the Brothers to the Rescue.
