DENVER — A Denver mother spent more than a year fighting Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield after the insurance company refused to cover her son’s emergency surgery, claiming the treatment was non-emergency, out-of-network care even though the boy had a bone protruding from his wrist.

Zion Bilal’s mother says her son, an avid skateboarder, suffered a compound fracture in March 2025 while attempting to skate a rail with friends.
