VA Secretary: Review of rare muscle disease for automatic benefits underway, but the decision will take time

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is reviewing whether a rare muscle disease affecting thousands of veterans should qualify for automatic disability benefits. Still, VA Secretary Doug Collins said the process will take time as researchers continue to evaluate the evidence.

Collins discussed the issue during an interview with 11Alive, where he also highlighted what he described as significant improvements in the agency’s claims-processing system and health care operations.
