AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME/WVII) — With the major primary races decided, Maine’s political attention is now shifting to the general election.
In the race for governor, Republican Bobby Charles, Democrat Hannah Pingree, and independent Rick Bennett will compete for the Blaine House.
Political observers say unenrolled and moderate voters could play a decisive role in the contest.
“I think Bennett really does change the decision-making and the strategizing of both Pingree and Charles,” said Mark Brewer, chair of political science at the University of Maine.
Another challenge for Pingree and Charles may be attracting campaign donations as donors focus on higher-profile races, particularly the U.S.
