A Democratic state Sen. candidate backed by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu in the First Suffolk District is a registered lobbyist whose nonprofit organization has taken in tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds, according to financial disclosure reports.

Latoya Gayle is running to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Nick Collins – a political rival of Wu’s – in a race that also includes fellow Democrat Juwan Skeens. Gayle, while running to be a first-time elected official, has influenced Beacon Hill’s budget process through her lobbying for taxpayer funds to be allocated towards the organization she works for.
