Affidavit details moments before deadly Milligan cycling team crash

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Newly obtained court documents detail what investigators say happened in the moments before a vehicle struck members of the Milligan University cycling team Wednesday, killing two cyclists and seriously injuring several others.

John Alexander Benfield, 69, of North Carolina, is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness, according to District Attorney Steve Finney.

The crash happened around 9:02 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 19E near Simerly Creek Road in Carter County.
