Health taxes: Overcoming technical and political challenges, including illicit trade concerns, and lessons from country experience

Health taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages are among the most effective interventions for reducing consumption of unhealthy products while generating government revenue.  

The side event is aligned with WHO’s global 3 by 35 Initiative, which calls on countries to increase the real prices of tobacco, alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages by at least 50% through health taxes by 2035. The initiative aims to reduce the burden of noncommunicable diseases while generating additional domestic resources that can support health and development priorities.
