UN warns political division in addressing climate change threatens economic stability

The Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Simon Stiell, warned on Thursday that political divisions and treating climate change as a partisan issue risks worsening the current environmental situation as well as the economic toll of climate change on Europe.

In a statement to the European Parliament, Stiell asserted that climate change has become a “continent-wide economic security emergency,” especially following the unprecedented heatwaves experienced in Europe during the summer months, which resulted in deaths, damages to infrastructure and power stations, mass evacuations, and disruption of trade routes, with further increases in food prices expected.
