Modelling by the parliamentary budget office shows half the expected $3bn in savings to reduce the private health insurance rebate to over 65s will be paid for by pensioners.

The figures, commissioned by independent MP and doctor Monique Ryan, found that $1.6bn of the total budget savings would be met by the nearly 1.5 million age pensioners who hold private health insurance.
