California voters will decide this November whether to approve Proposition 39, a measure that would require government-issued identification for in-person voting and different verification for mail-in ballots.

Currently, California voters are not required to show ID when voting in person. For mail-in ballots, voters must ensure their signature on the ballot envelope matches the one on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Proposition 39 would change these requirements. A “yes” vote on the measure would mandate government-issued photo ID for in-person voting
