Between 1972 and 1977, the German photographer Marianne Wex (1937-2020) captured postures on the streets of her hometown, Hamburg, focusing on arms, legs, heads, hands and feet. Drawing on other visual sources, such as books, newspapers, advertisements, and film and television stills, she organised the images by types of body language to create her influential work Let’s Take Back Our Space: ‘Female’ and ‘Male’ Body Language as a Result of Patriarchal Structures.
Wex’s piece was acquired by New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2018 and is the starting point for Taking Back Our Space: Photographic Perspectives. The show aims
