WASHINGTON – Congressional leaders on Monday warned the Trump administration against proposals that would give the president greater control over National Institutes of Health research grants.
They issued the warning as President Donald Trump considers an executive order for creating an outside commission to review and potentially veto NIH grant awards.
Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Vice Chair Patty Murray, D-Wash., said such a system could undermine the NIH procedure of awarding research money based on scientific and merit-based review.
The administration argues that some NIH funded projects conflict with Trump’s priorities.
