The US Chamber of Commerce has sued Hawaii to invalidate its new law that, it says, would categorically ban political speech by corporations and other groups.
Hawaii’s Act 11 violates the First Amendment by forbidding all state and foreign corporations from engaging in “election activity” and “ballot activity,” the chamber said in a complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the District of Hawaii.
Among the activities limited by the law — which takes effect next July — would be paying, contributing, or spending money to support or oppose a political candidate, committee, party, or ballot question, the complaint
