David Camfield and Charlie Post’s recent conversation in Tempest, “Party Time?,” raises one of the most important strategic questions facing the socialist Left: What kind of revolutionary organization is possible today? Both Camfield and Post reject the idea that small groups can proclaim themselves revolutionary parties in miniature, as well as the alternative idea of abandoning revolutionary politics for reformism. Much less defined, however, is their proposal regarding these two poles — as they themselves acknowledge.
Their question is important, but answering it requires asking another question that receives much less attention in their discussion: What exactly is “our time”? Any debate
