Weird and misleading political ads: How to talk to kids about them

Midterm elections are underway, and the commercials and clips can be terrifying. You’re minding your business, watching a football game, when an AI-generated image, deepfake, or scenario portending doom suddenly appears.

Earlier this year, a Halloween-themed video showed Maura Healey, red-eyed and hissing, with a fake voice-over; another showed her with garbage falling from her mouth. More recently, as the Globe reported, a clip appeared to show a shirtless Graham Platner from Maine typing offensive Reddit comments. Another featured Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico sermonizing about hating Christianity.

It’s a lot for adults to absorb.
