Local political races are too close to call. For one thing, polls are increasingly unreliable because it is more difficult to contact a random sample. In the days of landline telephones, pollsters could rely on phone listings, and most people answered their phones because they didn’t know who was calling. Then came answering machines, so many people would wait to hear the message that the caller left before picking up the receiver. And caller ID machines show the number of the caller without even listening to them. Now most people no longer have landlines because they use cell phones.
