Sheriffs shouldn’t be politicians, but the law says otherwise

The caller sounded somber. Early voting in New Mexico’s primary election begins May 5. He was feeling overwhelmed already.

Early voting is good for democracy, I said. Historically many people had to fight for the ballot because of their gender or the color of their skin. As bad as these times are, we have the ballot. We can even get the ballot 28 days before the election to work around vacations, family obligations or job responsibilities.

The election is a maze, the caller said. How can anyone determine who are the best candidates in all those down-ballot races?
