Sheriff’s indictment adds to New Orleans’ year of political turmoil

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Outgoing Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson made her first court appearance Thursday and is now out on bond, adding another chapter to a stunning year of criminal cases involving New Orleans elected leaders.

Hutson’s indictment comes just months after former New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell was charged in federal court. It marks the first time a sitting mayor and sitting sheriff in New Orleans have faced criminal charges within the same year.

The cases are separate. Cantrell is being prosecuted in federal court, while Hutson is being prosecuted by the state. But together, they have placed New Orleans
