Tsipras comeback shakes up Greek politics

The return of Alexis Tsipras, the former left-wing prime minister, and the emergence of new smaller parties are expected to reshape and fragment the Greek political landscape ahead of the next national elections.

Tsipras, who led the country during the peak of the economic and debt crisis in 2015, has undergone a rebranding exercise and is now expected to announce a new party on 26 May.

He resigned as Syriza leader in 2023 following a heavy defeat by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the incumbent conservative prime minister and then quit parliament in 2025.
