ATLANTA — Coca-Cola is marking its 140th anniversary with a story that remains deeply tied to the city where it began.

Founded in Atlanta in 1886, Coca-Cola has grown from a drink sold at Jacob’s Pharmacy into a global beverage giant, but company officials say its roots have never left Georgia. 

Coca-Cola archivist Neeve Kelly said inventor John Pemberton created the drink to give Atlantans a cold, caffeinated alternative to coffee and tea during hot summer
