Since 2020, North Carolina has grown by over 750,000 people.
The South has been the leader in U.S. expansion. From 2020 to 2025, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Texas have accounted for three-fifths of the growth.
But that increase is slowing.
“States in the South are still driving the country’s growth. They’re just not driving it as much as they did in the past,” said Brennan Center for Justice Senior Counsel Michael Li.
