CALEDONIA, Wis. — A proposed data center in Caledonia, Wis., led one resident with no prior interest in local politics to run for office and become the village’s acting president.
Prescott Balch said he had not been paying attention to local government before the proposal — which was made about a year ago now and was planned about a mile from Balch’s home. After he spoke out against the project and Microsoft backed out, neighbors encouraged him to run for the Caledonia’s Village Board.
